Obituary

The Rev. Clarence J. Burby, S.J. died peacefully at Campion Center on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at the age of 83, in the 64th year of his life as a Jesuit. Fr. Burby was born and raised in Baghdad, Iraq. Throughout his life as priest and teacher, he had ministered faithfully at numerous institutions throughout the Middle East: at Baghdad College; St. Joseph University in Beirut, Lebanon; Maison St. Paul in Damascus, Syria; Equipes Notre Dame in Aleppo, Syria; and at The Jesuit Center in Amman, Jordan. Because of declining health, he concluded his public ministry with a final assignment to the Campion Health & Wellness Center, where he has lived and prayed for the Church and the Society of Jesus since 2012. In addition to his many Jesuit brothers, Fr. Burby is survived by his brother Mervyn Burby and his wife, Ferial of Surrey, England and his sister, Eileen Klose and her husband, Lothar of Laudau, Germany. He is additionally survived by devoted nephews, cousins and friends. A wake will be held on Wednesday, January 2, 2019, from 3-5PM at Campion Center, 319 Concord Rd, Weston, MA., concluding with a vigil prayer service at 4:30PM. A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will take place in Campion’s Chapel of the Holy Spirit at 10AM on Thursday, January 3rd, followed immediately by burial in the Campion Jesuit Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made in Fr. Burby’s memory to the Campion Jesuit Community, 319 Concord Rd., Weston, MA 02493.
