Obituary

Leonard P. Mayo passed away peacefully at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford on Saturday evening. He was 87. Raised in Medford, he was the son of the late Anna Mayo.

Leonard was a life-long Medford resident who was proud of being raised and enjoyed living on Ship Ave. Leonard served in the Army in anti-aircraft artillery. He continued his service in the National Guard. A hard-working man who provided for his large family, Leonard worked primarily as a ship fitter and helped build large ocean vessels. He was also an iron worker with local #7. He worked as a paver, helping to build route 93. He worked with a local fence company and installed and built fences. A very friendly and social man, Leonard worked in his retirement for 18 years as a parts delivery man and courtesy van driver with Olsen Cadillac of Woburn where he made many friends over the years.

He enjoyed back-yard gardening during the spring and summer months and shared the fruit of his labors with neighbors, family and friends. He loved sports and watched the games of the Red Sox, Bruins and Patriots. He even enjoyed watching golf tournaments even though he never played. Always proud of his Irish heritage, he was dedicated to his family and stayed close to his children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters. He looked forward to traveling to San Antonio and visiting many historic sites. He was a man with a great sense of humor, an optimistic outlook on life and a youthful way of thinking.

The beloved husband of 62 years to the late Margaret L. “Honey” (Diggs), he was a devoted father to Christine A. Cashman and her husband Thomas of Derry, NH, Sheila L. Lawson and her husband Tim of San Antonio, TX, Leonard J. Mayo and his wife Peggy of Maynard, Cheryl M. Perfit of Medford and her late husband Joshua, Charlene McCue and her husband Charles of Dracut, Laura L. Robishaw and her husband Mark of Woburn. He was a loving grandfather to: Lisa and her husband Edward, Noelle and her husband John, David and his wife Brigitte, Brendon and his wife Sharon, Eric and his wife Abbie, Melissa and her husband Kris, Ashley, Matthew, Mikayla and her fiancé Kyle, Sarah and Tyler. He leaves his loving great-grandchildren: Rachel, Alexander, John Roman, Addyson, Madelyn, Hannah, Aiden, Kathryn, Olivia, Dylan, Connor, Ryan and Declan. He was a dear brother to Eileen, Thomas, Bernadette "Bunny" and the late Mary, Frances, Catherine and Brendan and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.


Funeral from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, Monday, December 31st at 9 AM followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 118 High Street, Medford, at 10 AM. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Sunday 5 - 9 PM.
