Obituary


Philip Walker Cahill Sr., age 94, passed away on December 20, 2018 at St. Teresa Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, 519 Bridge Street, Manchester, NH 03104.
He was born in Salem, Massachusetts on 9/25/1924, the son of H. Walker Cahill and Marie Heffernan Cahill.
Mr. Cahill graduated from Salem High School, Salem, MA in 1941 and attended a year of Preparatory School at Worcester Acacdemy, Worcester, MA and graduated in 1942. He was a graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and served in the Merchant Marine during WW2.
Captain Cahill was a born mariner and was raised on the water in the Salem Willows section of Salem, MA. He was the owner and operator of Cahill's Boatyard on Winter Island Road in Salem, MA until selling the business and retiring at the age of 55. He was very proud to be comissioned as the Deputy Pilot Commissioner for District 2 and Harbor Pilot in Salem by then Governor Endicott Peabody in 1963. He raised his family in Marblehead, MA and was a member of The Star of the Sea Parish and the Boston Yacht Club. The family enjoyed many vacations up and down the Eastern Seaboard on board his beloved boat, The Triumph. He was a world traveler always planning his next adventure and in later years became an avid runner winning many medals and trophies in his age group. He retired to Lake Worth, FL and spent summers in Marblehead, MA before moving to NH in 2006 to be near his daughter and her family.
Even though this ancient mariner had a gruff exterior, he was warm hearted and had a generous soul.
He was predeceased by his son, Philip W. Cahill Jr. who passed away on April 13, 2015 in Tanzania, Africa and his wife, Caroline B. Cahill who passed away on June 22, 2018 in Manchester, NH. He leaves behind a loving daughter, Christine Cahill Swett and son-in-law, Jeffery C. Swett of Hooksett, NH and a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Clowe Cahill of Rockledge, FL. He also leaves behind 9 grandchildren, Joshua W. Swett of Manchester, NH, Chloe M. Cahill of Rockledge, FL, Shane W. Cahill of Puntarenas, Costa Rica, twins Morgan P. Cahill and Patrick J. Cahill of San Jose, Costa Rica, Nicolas Cahill of San Ramon, Costa Rica, Walker Cahill of San Ramon, Costa Rica and adopted grand daughters, Briana Cahill of Rockledge, FL and Jennie Cahill of Colombia, S.A. He also leaves behind 3 great grandchildren, Hailey M. Cahill of Rockledge, FL, Liam Cahill of San Jose, Costa Rica and Sofia Cahill of San Jose, Costa Rica.
The family will celebrate his life privately.
