Ernest G. Cardillo, 97

Ernest G. Cardillo, age 97, a resident of the Village at Willow Crossings in Mansfield, formerly of Natick and Englewood, FL. Passed away peacefully at Norwood Hospital in Norwood on Saturday, December 8, 2018. He was the beloved husband of the late Mildred (McManus) Cardillo, to whom he was wed for sixty years at the time of her death on October 8, 2017.

Born in Boston, MA on September 26, 1921, he was a loving son of the late Benjamin and Nicoletta (Petitto) Cardillo.

Ernie grew up in the Roslindale neighborhood of Boston and was a 1939 graduate of Roslindale High School. During WWII, he proudly served his country for over three years as a member of the United States Navy and was honorably discharged from active duty with the rank of Motor Machinist’s Mate, Second Class.

Prior to retirement. Mr. Cardillo had faithfully been employed for forty years for the City of Boston Traffic and Parking Department, working his way up to the position of manager. He had made his home in Mansfield for the past twelve years and had previously resided in Natick and Englewood, Florida.

Ernie was a communicant of Saint Mary’s Church in Mansfield and a former parishioner of Saint Patrick’s Church in Natick. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in both Mansfield and Natick and was a member of the Elks while living Natick and Englewood.

Ernie’s favorite times by far were those spent with his adoring family. He truly enjoyed playing golf and when younger was an avid saltwater fisherman.

He is survived by his devoted children Carol A. Callahan and her husband Dan of Norton and James D. Cardillo and his fiancé Claudia of Stafford Springs, Connecticut. He was the cherished grandfather of Dani Callahan and Jack Callahan of Norton. He was the dear brother of the late Charlie, Sam, Guy, Louise and Vera and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

His funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Friday, December 14th at 10:00 A.M. in Saint Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt St. (Route 106) Mansfield. Military honors will be rendered at the conclusion of services. Burial will be private at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Visiting hours are omitted and in lieu of flowers, Ernest’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Guardian Angel Scholarship Fund at Saint Mary’s Catholic School 330 Pratt Street Mansfield, MA 02048.
