Obituary

SOMERSET – Edmund J. Lima, age 87 of Somerset, passed away peacefully at the Sarah S. Brayton Nursing Care Center on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018. Born in Portsmouth, RI, he was the son of the late William & Mary (Furtado) Lima and the beloved husband of the late Gilda (Albernaz) Lima.

He is survived by one son, Robert E. Lima (wife Susan) of Somerset and one daughter: Patricia A. Affonso (late husband David) of Somerset. Grandfather of Anthony Costa (wife Allison) of Mattapoisett, Andrew Lima of Berkley, and Matthew Lima (wife Karen) of Somerset. Great grandfather to Colton and Hadley Costa, and Avery and Maisie Lima. Great “stepper” to Carissa, Sabrina, and Isaac Affonso. Ed was the brother of the late Ethel Ann Dwyer, George and William Lima.

Ed was a parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church, Somerset, a member of the Men’s Club and CCD teacher 1986-1998, recipient of the Marion Medal in 1997, past president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society 1992-1995, member of the Somerset VFW Post 8500, Post Commander 1967-1968, and Field Commander of the Drum & Bugle Corps.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force 1950-1953, having served at Did Salena Air Force Base, Casablanca, Morocco during the Korean War (Conflict). His base was in the field of the Atlas Mountains. Their mission was to calibrate, set up, and maintain early warning and tactical control radar and radar sites in support of the Strategic Air Command.

Ed also served on the U.S. Air Force Reserves 1953-1977 and the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves 1957-1960. He was the Treasurer for the Town of Somerset 1992-2011, Town of Somerset Veterans Agent 1996-2011, and Somerset Council on Aging Board Member 1998-2006.

Memorial contributions in Ed’s memory may be made to the Home Base Program (a Red Sox Foundation & MGH program) or to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Dept. of Massachusetts.

Ed’s funeral will take place from the Manuel Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, Inc. 1521 N. Main St. Fall River, MA on Tuesday, Dec. 11th here at 9:00 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick’s Church, Somerset at 10:00 A.M.
