Obituary

New Bedford – Maria do Carmo (Amaral) Moniz, age 96, of New Bedford passed away on Friday, November 30, 2018 at home with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife of Gil Moniz and the daughter of the late Manuel and Violante (Xavier) Amaral.

Maria was born in Ribeira Quente, Sao Miguel, Azores and came to this area in 1948 where she worked as a seamstress for Brooke & Elco Dress Manufacturing. She was a woman of strong faith and a devoted member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

Maria will be remembered as the matriarch of her family, filled with grace, quick wit and a kind heart. A natural caregiver, she provided loving care for her husband. Maria was a loving mother and “Vavo” to her grandchildren. She kept her vegetable and flower gardens vibrant, even maintaining some of her plants for many decades. Her delicious cooking, which could never be replicated, brought comfort to all. Her strength and her sweetness went together effortlessly and both will be equally and greatly missed.
