Obituary

SOUTH HADLEY ~ John A. Mikuszewski, 67, of South Hadley and the longtime owner of the Notre Dame Memorial Company in South Hadley, was Called Safely Home on Monday, November 26, 2018. He passed into Eternal Life at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston after a valiant battle with cancer surrounded by his loving family and his wonderful caregivers. John was born in Holyoke on January 22, 1951, a beloved son of the late Frank P. and Winifred (Tucker) Mikuszewski. He was raised in South Hadley, graduated from South Hadley High School in 1969 and was a lifelong resident of South Hadley. He furthered his education and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Saint Anselm College in Manchester, NH. In 1933, his late uncle, John C. Mikuszewski, founded the Notre Dame Memorial Company in South Hadley. He was later joined in the business by his late brother and John’s father, Frank P. Mikuszewski. In 1973, John joined the business with his father. John later became the sole owner which he operated until his passing. For the past 20 years, John was fortunate to have the skill and expertise of David Montovani who will continue John’s legacy. John was well known in the area for his meticulous work and craftsmanship. He recently designed the Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Sullivan Memorial at Pope Francis Preparatory School in Springfield and the Titanic Centennial Memorial in 2012 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Springfield. John was well respected by many monument dealers and was a member of the Barre Granite Monument Dealers Association. He was a communicant of Saint Patrick Church in South Hadley Falls where he previously served on the Parish Council. He was a member of the Galaxy Community Council at Westover Air Reserve Base and the Lions Club in South Hadley. He enjoyed skiing and was a ski instructor for the Lions Club Blind Ski Program at the former Mount Tom in Holyoke for many years. He served the Town of South Hadley for the past 31 years as a Water Commissioner and was previously named Citizen of the Year in South Hadley. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Evelyn R. “Evie” (Roule) Mikuszewski. They were married on November 23, 1997 at Saint Patrick Church in South Hadley and recently celebrated 21 years of happiness together. He also leaves his three cherished children, Alyssa M. Schnabel and her husband, Michael, of Grafton, Sara L. Sweetser and her husband, Joel, of Worcester and Steven D. Pope; his five cherished grandchildren whom he adored, Owen, Gavin, and Molly Schnabel and Nolan and Aidan Sweetser; his loving brother, Frank P. Mikuszewski, Jr. and his wife, Maureen, of Wilbraham; his two loving sisters, Marie W. Woolf and her husband, Brian, of Greenville, SC and Kathleen M. Maister and her husband, David, of Boston; and his many dear brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Mikuszewski and Roule families. His relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at 10 a.m. in Saint Patrick Church, 30 Main Street, South Hadley, MA 01075. His burial will follow the Mass at Mater Dolorosa Cemetery, 152 Pittroff Avenue, South Hadley, MA 01075.
