Obituary

MUNGOVAN, Robert W. 86, of Wellesley Hills formerly of Belmont, passed away unexpectedly on November 23, 2018, with his family close at hand. He is survived by his wife of more than 57 years, Clare (Mullahy) and by his six children, Robert M. and his wife Gina of Needham, John and his wife Sue Ann of Barrington, RI, Thomas and his wife Elizabeth of Needham, Maryann and her husband Timothy Murphy of Needham, Timothy and his wife Carol of Wellesley, and Patrick and his wife Jennifer of Wellesley. Cherished "Big Bob” to twenty grandchildren: Robbie, Liam, James, Emily, Andrew, Molly, Meghan, Cecilia, Matthew, Tim, Brendan, Julia, Aidan, Patrick, Maeve, Will, Cate, Martine, Finn, and Danny. Bob is also survived by his sisters Jane Tingey of Horseheads, NY, Nancy O’Connor of Belmont, Edith Monahan of Belmont, Marie Stabile of Westford, and Dorothy Hecht of Dana Point, CA. Predeceased by his siblings Carol, Sally, and Walter.

Bob was a graduate of Belmont High School and Boston University. He received an MBA from Northeastern University and MA in Finance from St. Louis University. After 26 years of active duty service, Bob retired as a Lt. Col. in the United States Army. He was a Veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and also served in Germany, Kwajalein (Marshall Islands), and various stateside assignments including Watertown Arsenal, Redstone Arsenal in Alabama, and St. Louis. He received various military awards, including the Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. Following his military service, Bob enjoyed a long career in business at GTE.

A longtime resident of Wellesley, Bob was very proud of his family. He was an active parishioner and long-serving Eucharistic Minister of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Wellesley Hills. Bob was an active member of the Military Order of the World Wars, Greater Boston.

Visiting hours at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St., (Rt.16) WELLESLEY on Tuesday, November 27 from 4-8pm. Funeral from the funeral home on Wednesday, November 28 at 9am followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, 9 Glen Rd., Wellesley Hills at 10am. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Needham. Donations may be made in Bob’s memory to Elizabeth Seton Residence, 125 Oakland St., Wellesley Hills, MA 02481.
