Obituary

SPRINGFIELD ~ Helen M. (Bergdoll) Bryce, 85, of the East Springfield section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, November 20, 2018. She passed into Eternal Life at her home surrounded by all the memories she loved and cherished. She was born in Springfield on October 11, 1933, a beloved daughter of the late Frederick J. and Margaret M. (Patterson) Bergdoll. She was raised in Springfield, graduated from the former Sacred Heart Elementary and High Schools in Springfield and was a lifelong resident of the city. Helen was employed for 20 years as a secretary for the City of Springfield Election Commission and retired in April of 1997. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Springfield. As an accomplished piano player by ear, Helen was a member of the Over 60 Club at Sacred Heart Church where she often played the piano for many of their events. She enjoyed baseball and was a “die hard” New York Yankees fan. Most of all, she was a wonderful homemaker to her family. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, James A. Bryce, Jr. who was Called Home on April 14, 1959. She leaves her devoted daughter and best friend, Debra A. Shewchuk and her husband, Robert, of Springfield; her three cherished grandchildren whom she adored, Timothy, Ryan and Meghan Shewchuk; her loving sister, Margaret “Peggy” Garvey and her husband, John, of Chicopee; her two dear sisters-in-law, Helen Bergdoll and Mary Bergdoll; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and numerous friends. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her two loving brothers, Robert and Frederick Bergdoll. Her relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. Her Burial will follow the Mass at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. There are no visiting hours at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107. Her family requests that memorial donations be made in her memory to the Sacred Heart Church Renovation Fund, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
