WORCESTER-Angelo T. Soter, beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, brother and uncle died Wednesday, December 14th. He leaves his wife of 59 years Evelyn P. (Pallas) Soter, a daughter; Penelope C. wife of Eugene Wolosz, a son; Theodore E. Soter all of Worcester, 4 brothers; Dino Sotiropoulos and Anthony Soter both of Worcester and George Soter of Connecticut and Arthur Soter of Cape Cod, a grandson; David and his wife Laurence Farnell and a great-grandson Maxime all of Toronto, 3 godchildren; Joanne Isperduli of Worcester, George Tavlas of Athens, Greece and Dr. James Pialtos of Whitinsville, and many nephews and nieces. A son; William M. Soter died in 2000, and a brother Andrew Soter, and a sister Penelope Sotiropoulos predeceased him.
He was born in Worcester, September 9, 1921 the son of Theodore and Eugenia (Panagopoulos) Sotiropoulos. He was a graduate of Commerce High School and had worked for Heald Machine. Mr. Soter enlisted in the US Navy, Air Corps at the outbreak of World War 2, and attended Middlebury College for training prior to being assigned at the Naval Training Station in Bainbridge, MD as a Chief Petty Officer. After the war he co-owned the famous Highlander Restaurant with James Labovites from 1949 until 1970. In 1964 Mr. Soter was appointed by Governor Endicott Peabody as director of the Massachusetts State College Building Authority, and later continued to work for the Commonwealth in its Relocation Bureau. He then became an independent real estate broker at the age of 75. He was a life-long member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral and served on many of its committees, the Order of A.H.E.P.A., and the Odd Fellows organization serving on its Real Estate Planning Board. Mr. Soter was an avid gardener and enjoyed music, theater and literature.
The funeral is Monday, December 19th from O’CONNNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, with a service at 11:00 AM in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday, December 18th from 3:00 until 7:00 PM in the funeral home.
