Mary A. Morton, 93

Dateline: Mansfield, MA

Mary A. (Heery) Morton, age 93, of Mansfield, passed away in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, November 15, 2018. She was the beloved wife of the late William G. Morton, Jr., to whom she was wed for forty-four years at the time of his death on January 23, 1995.

Born in Brockton, MA on December 24, 1924, she was a loving daughter of the late Thomas J. and Mary (Riordan) Heery.

Mary grew up in Brockton, was educated in St. Patrick’s Schools and was a graduate of St. Patrick’s High School. She continued her education, graduating from the Carney Hospital School of Nursing in Dorchester with a degree in registered nursing.

A resident of Mansfield for the past sixty-five years, Mrs. Morton was a retired registered nurse having worked at the former Paul A. Dever State School in Taunton.

Mary was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield and a member of the Catholic Women’s Club. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and her hobbies included traveling, golfing and playing friendly games of poker with friends.

She is survived by her devoted children: Jean F. Tanous and her husband John of Mansfield, Patricia A. Sowinski of Westerly, RI, William G. Morton, III and his wife Karen of Raynham, Christine M. Poitrast and her husband Greg of East Freetown, and Carolyn M. Tripp and her husband Hugh of Mansfield. She was the dear sister of the late Thomas Heery and the Very Reverend Cornelius J. Heery. She is also survived by her cherished 11 grandchildren, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.


Her funeral Mass, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 20th at 11:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt St. (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Mansfield.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, November 19th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the Community Visiting Nurse Agency, 10 Emory St., Attleboro, MA 02703.
