Obituary

Margaret "Peg" T. (Ryan) Alessi, a lifelong resident of South Boston, passed away at age 87 on November 8, 2018.

Beloved mother of Paul Alessi, Donna Alessi and her husband Joseph Kinsella, Sandra Alessi and David Alessi. Dear sister of Mary E. (Ryan) Packer of Malden and her late husband Walter, June Ryan of South Boston and the late John Ryan, William Ryan and Martin Ryan. Loving "Charlie" to Jaylannie, Alexis, Tommy and Bella. Lovingly survived by many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Peg attended UMass Boston later in life where she received her Undergraduate degree in Counseling and Master's degree in Education. Following her graduation, she held several positions serving the South Boston community. Most notably were the years she spent working at the South Boston Neighborhood House Senior Center as Director of the "Jet Set" program. Peg was instrumental in planning the many fundraising events held to benefit the Center and was the mastermind of the penny fundraising initiative that led to the barn raising of the new Senior Center at its current location at H and E. 6th St. Peg also served as the leader of the Laboure Center Adult Day Care Program and as a substitute teacher at the Patrick F. Gavin Middle School. She was the recipient of several community service awards recognizing the commitment and excellence of her work.

Aside from these professional achievements, Peg considered her life's passion to be that of mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and aunt. She loved her family more than anything in life and it was the greatest source of her joy and happiness. She was a devoted and supportive friend and was blessed with many lifelong friendships.

Peg was very proud of her Irish heritage as the daughter of immigrant parents, Mary (Hardy) Ryan and Martin Ryan who had settled in South Boston. She had traveled to Ireland to visit the hometowns of her parents and meet family members. On the top of the list of her favorite holiday celebrations was St. Patrick's Day and the annual South Boston parade.

Peg loved to share and was never at a loss for words. She liked to write and was an avid reader, particularly enjoying philosophy, a knowledge she graciously shared to all who were interested. Her children and grandchildren were among her favorite students.

Peg will be deeply missed by all her knew and loved her.

At her request, services were private. Following in Peg's generous custom of charitable giving, any donations may be made in her memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Seasons Hospice Foundation, 6400 Shafer Ct., Suite 700, Rosemont, IL 60018.
