Obituary

Ward, Alice E. (Emmert) a 46-year resident of Wellesley, died on October 29, 2018. She was 84.

Born and raised in Lawrence, Alice graduated in 1951 from Abbot Academy in Andover. She went on to study at Brown University, where she received a B.S. in chemistry in 1955. Alice was a practicing chemist for many years, first at Dow Chemical in Midland, Michigan and then at Ciba Labs in Summit, New Jersey. She married J. Stewart “Stew” Ward in 1961, and they were married for 46 years until his death in 2007. A resident of Wellesley since 1972, Alice worked in several local schools, including Dana Hall and the Wellesley Middle School, where she taught in the computer lab. She was a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout den mother, soccer coach and long time supporter of Wellesley’s youth athletic programs.

Following her retirement, Alice was an active participant at the Wellesley Council on Aging. She led the “bears group” that produced Teddy bears to give to children in need, participated in weekly cribbage games and studied conversational German. Alice also volunteered at the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church. Her interests and talents included everything from quilting and knitting, to swimming and water-skiing, to plumbing and wallpapering. Throughout her life, Alice enjoyed spending her summers with family and friends at Big Island Pond in Derry, NH.

Alice is survived by her son, Thomas S. and his wife, Andrea, of Wellesley; her daughter, Laurie W. Burke and her husband, Scott, also of Wellesley; four grandchildren, Allison and Caroline Ward and Christopher and Connor Burke; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, November 1 at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington Street (Rt. 16) in Wellesley. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, November 2 at the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church, 207 Washington Street (Rt. 16) in Wellesley. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellesley.
