Obituary

BETSY COFFIN ROBINSON, 71, of Hingham, died on Saturday, December 10th surrounded by her family, at her home after a long illness. Born in Boston February 19th, 1934, she was raised in Wellesley where she attended Beaver Country Day School. She attended Smith College where she graduated with honors in 1956. While at Smith she toured Europe with the Chamber Singers.
After living in New York City and Boston, she married in 1959 and settled in Hingham where she raised three sons with her husband James. If raising three active boys weren't enough, she was active in many Hingham organizations as a tireless volunteer. She was president of the trustees of the Hingham Public Library, president of the Hingham Visiting Nurse Association, president of the First Parish (Old Ship) Church in Hingham, a Corporator of Beaver Country Day School, and was a course assistant at the Radcliff Seminars. She also served on the Copley Square Centennial Committee during the reconstruction of Copley Square.
She will be well remembered for her organizational skills in the service of her causes and her loyalty to them. In all she did she carried a sense of optimism, energy and spunk. Her philosophy, taken from a great aunt, was "If they ask you to go, always say yes, unless you can think of a very good reason to say no." An only child, she rose to the challenge of raising three boys with spirits of their own. Surrounded by men with interest in outdoor adverntures, she always went along. An accomplished sailor and skier, she loved the outdoors and cruised from Newport to Nova Scotia. She also sailed in the 210 Class at the Hingham Yacht Club with her husband.
Mrs. Robinson leaves her husband of 46 years, James R. Robinson of Hingham and her three sons; David of Hingham, Allan of Dorchester and Russell and his wife Julie of Newton.
Also survived by her granddaughter Hailey Robinson also of Newton.
A Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday, December 17th at 11 AM at the First Parish (Old Ship) Church, 90 Main St., Hingham.
Visiting hours and flowers omitted by request. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Massachusetts Alzheimers Disease Research, c/o John H. Growdon, MD, Mass. General Hospital Dept. of Neurology, 15 Parkman St., Suite WAC830, Boston, MA 02114.
The interment is to be private.
