Obituary

Anthony B. Caran, life-long resident of Cumberland, Rhode Island passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, October 17th, at Rhode Island Hospital at the age of 80.

Anthony was the son of Anthony and Attilia Caran and proud brother of Peter Caran of Wood River Junction, RI. Anthony was married to his love of 57 years, Esther Reilly Caran. He was at his happiest when surrounded by his wife and family; daughter, Esther Caran Plouffe, her husband, William Plouffe and their children, Matthew and Essie Plouffe. His grandchildren truly were his greatest joys and treasures.

Anthony was a graduate of Cumberland High School and veteran of the United States Air Force, 48th Fighter Interceptor Squad. Anthony was proud of his service, and credits his time in the Air Force for giving him a firm foundation to live a successful and disciplined life. After his time in the service, Anthony worked at North American Phillips as a production manager and finished his career at Majestic Motors, retiring in 2003.

Fishing was Anthony’s passion whether it was surf casting on Martha’s Vineyard, fly fishing on a beautiful river in Iceland, or discovering prime fishing spots on local lakes in his boat. His annual trip to Whitman’s Long Lake Camps in Princeton, Maine with his grandson, Matthew, and his best friend of over 50 years, Joseph Houle, was the highlight of each summer. He loved all aspects of the sport and was a member of the Northern RI Chapter of Trout Unlimited where he developed friendships that he treasured. Anthony was also a member of the Manville Rod and Gun Club and was so proud to teach his granddaughter, Essie, the basics of target shooting.

Anthony loved the life he had been given. He appreciated the natural world and loved to travel with his family, but treasured his time at home as well, creating a beautiful home and gardens with his wife, Esther. He will always be remembered by many for his strength, loyalty and humor.
