Obituary

SPRINGFIELD ~ John Edward “Eddy” Mahoney, 82, of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, September 25, 2018. He passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Springfield on December 27, 1935, a beloved son of the late John E. and Catherine D. (Ryan) Mahoney. He was raised in Springfield and graduated from the former Springfield Technical High School. He was a lifelong resident of Springfield and served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Corporal. He received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was employed as a forklift operator and mail handler at the United States Bulk Mail Center in Springfield, retiring after 44 years. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Springfield. He enjoyed time spent with family and friends, dedicating Tuesdays as a special family day bookended by morning breakfast and crossword puzzles in the afternoon. Eddy was an avid reader and thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors, whether it was a backyard party or quiet time with a good book. In former years, many days were spent boating and fishing at his camp. Eddy also liked to use his wide assortment of tools for various do-it-yourself projects. He leaves his two loving sisters and his loving brother, Patricia E. McCabe of West Springfield, Linda M. Mahoney of Chicopee and James L. Mahoney of Holyoke; his two cherished nephews and three cherished nieces, Mark McCabe, Maureen Tsatsos and her husband, Anthony, Meg McCabe, Christopher Mahoney and his wife, Jenifer Piegaro Mahoney, and Rebecca Mahoney; and his two cherished grandnephews, Matthew and Nathaniel Tsatsos. Eddy will also be deeply missed by his dear friend and neighbor, Rene Roy and his late partner, Lynne Bennett; and Lynne’s daughter, Tiffany Fitzpatrick and her husband, Sean, of Chicopee and their children, Kyle, Briana, Summer and Devlin who were like his second family. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his dear brother-in-law, Richard J. McCabe who was Called Home on April 1, 2011. His Funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 10 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12 Noon at Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. His Committal Service with United States Marine Corps Military Honors will follow the Mass at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the Mass.
