FALL RIVER – Maria “Marquinhas” Da Luz (Ferreira) Sousa, age 104, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family at RI Hospital on August 15, 2018. She was the beloved wife of the late Hermano E. Sousa. Born in Capelas, São Miguel, Açores, she was the daughter of the late Manuel & Marianna Ferreira.
Maria is survived by her children Afonso Sousa (wife Escolastica) of Somerset, Laudalino “Larry” Sousa (wife Connie) of Westport and Dinasalia Medeiros (husband Luciano) of Fall River; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her children Edgardo Sousa (wife Ana) and Venilde Raposo (husband Afonso), 2 great-grandchildren, as well as four brothers; Manuel, Antonio, Jacinto and Jose Ferreira.
Maria immigrated to the United States in the mid-sixties with her husband. Before retiring, she had been employed by Fall River Knitting Mills. She was a parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Church in Fall River. She lived a long wonderful life. She was the matriarch of the family, a dedicated mother, grandmother, great grandmother & great great grandmother. Spending time with her family brought her great joy. She will be missed greatly by her family and friends.
Her funeral will take place from the Manuel Rogers & Sons Funeral Home 1521 N. Main St. Fall River on Saturday here at 7:45 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial St. Anthony of Padua Church at 9 A.M. Interment in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
