Mariena A. (Gerokoulis) Chines, 74 beloved wife of 52 years to Salvatore A. Chines, passed away peacefully on July 25th surrounded by her family. She is predeceased by her parents, Harry Gerokoulis and Mabel (Whitmarsh) Gerokoulis, her son, Peter Chines and her sister, Susan Young. She is survived by her son, Anthony Chines and his fiancée Lynn Stocking of Grapevine, Texas; her daughter, Maria Claffey and her husband George Claffey of Newington, Connecticut and her grandchildren, Ryan and Caitlin, who were her whole world. She also leaves behind a brother, Stephen Gerokoulis and his wife Christine of South Weymouth, Massachusetts, and half-sisters, Elissa & Patricia Della-Piana.
Sal and Mariena fulfilled their retirement dream by moving to Cape Cod. She enjoyed playing the flute in several Cape Cod community bands and volunteered to become the music librarian helping to organize music, performances, and programs.
She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She worked hard to be a part of many people’s lives and enjoyed most the stories and adventures of her grandchildren. By phone, mail, or an in-person visit, she always stayed in contact with her family and friends. If she had been over your house, you would have a trademark thank you note from her the next day.
As a volunteer, Mariena was known for her generous spirit, and selflessly gave her time to help others. She enjoyed volunteering at both the VNA Thiftique and the Yarmouth Senior Center. Mariena loved gardening and spent countless hours caring for her plants and flowers.
Her funeral service will be conducted in the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main Street, Medford, on Saturday, July 28th at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend and may visit with the family from 9 through 11 AM. Services will conclude with interment at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mariena’s name may be sent to the cancer organization of One’s choice.
