Obituary

Manuel V. Faria, 86, of New Bedford died Wednesday November 23, 2005 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Adela S. (Benbenek) Faria.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Joseph V. and Anna C. (Faria) Faria, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.

He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in South Dartmouth.

Mr. Faria was a self-employed carpenter and had also worked as a carpenter for Mendonca Contracting. He later was head custodian at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church until his retirement.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, participating in the battles and campaigns of Northern France, the Rhineland, the Ardennes, and Central Europe. He was awarded the American Theater Campaign ribbon, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign ribbon, the Good Conduct medal and the World War II Victory medal.

Mr. Faria served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Colorado, Arizona, New Hampshire, and Texas. He was a member American Association of Retired Persons and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Eric V. Faria of New Bedford; and a niece.

He was the brother of the late Mary Ferreira, Henry Faria and Joseph Faria.

His Funeral Service will be held on Monday November 28, 2005 at 1 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park Street, New Bedford. Visitation will be Monday 12-1 PM, prior to the service. Burial will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
