Neal E. Doherty Jr., age 83, of Woburn, formerly of Winchester, passed away November 22nd following a short illness. He was the beloved husband of Mary E. (Cullen). Born in Winchester he was the son of the late Mary Agnes (Connolly) and Neal E. Doherty Sr.
Mr. Doherty was a retired draftsman and designer working for forty years in the High-Tech Defense and Computer Industry. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII honorably serving from 1942 to 1946. He was the first recipient of the Naval Amphibious Badge in recognition of his many succesfull landings delivering U.S. troops on shore during the invasion North Africa and Italy.
Mr. Doherty also served the community by volunteering at the Bedford VA Hospital, Winchester Hospital, and the Meals on Wheels Program. He was an avid sports fan and loved following the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, Boston College and Notre Dame Football. It has been requested that in lieu of flowers memorial contribtuions may be made in his memory to the HealthCare Dimensions Hospice, 48 Woerd Ave, Suite 102, Waltham, MA 02453.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Doherty is survived by his children, Neal E. Doherty III and his wife Geri of Duxbury, Denise Kelley and her husband Thomas of Wellesley, Jerome Doherty and his wife Patrice of Woodstock, VT. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Christopher, Bryan and Kyle Doherty, Deirdre and T.J. Kelley, Connor, Megan and Anna Doherty and great grandson Mackenzie Kelley. He is further survived by his sisters, Marjorie Middleton of Kennebunkport, ME and Louise Doherty of Woburn, brothers, Leonard Doherty of Plymouth and and Paul Doherty of Woburn. He is predeceased by his sister Marion Reil.
Funeral from the McLaughlin - Dello Russo Funeral Home 60 Pleasant St., Woburn, Saturday, at 9 AM. Followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Barbara Church, 138 Cambridge Rd., Woburn, at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Friday 4 thru 8. Services will conclude with burial at Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester.
