Obituary

WORCESTER-Charles A. Hurtle, 88, of 10 Manomet Street, died Thursday, November 17th in the Life Care Center of Auburn after a short illness. He leaves his wife of 62 years Yvonne M. (Severy) Hurtle, his sisters, several nephews and nieces, and a brother-in-law Eldon L. and his wife Esther L. Evans of Worcester.

He was born in Worcester the son of Daniel A. and Jessie (Mercier) Hurtle. Mr. Hurtle had been employed as a supervisor for the City of Worcester, Street Department for over 30 years. He was a World War 2 Army Veteran serving in Normandy and in Belgium and was active with clandestine operations throughout Europe. Mr. Hurtle was a Purple Heart recipient, with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Medal, the American Campaign Medal with 3 stars, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 3 stars, the World War II Victory Medal and the World War II Army of Occupation Medal with Berlin airplane device. He was also awarded The Commemorative Cross by Yugoslavia for service from 1941 to 1945. Charlie served as Past Commander of the Massachusetts Order of the Purple Heart, and Past Commander of V. F. W. Post 6055 in Southbridge. He was very active with Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton. Mr. Hurtle was instrumental in orchestrating the Annual Memorial Day Observance as well as other veteran services held at Worcester County Memorial Park. He was a strong supporter of Scouting through the Mohegan Council and Boy Scout Troop 306 in Rutland.

The funeral is Monday, November 21st, from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a Mass at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main Street. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park. Calling hours are Sunday, November 20th from 3:00 until 7:00 PM in the funeral home.
