William “Bill” E. Balcom, of Natick, 82, died Monday May 14, 2018 at his residence. Husband of the late Lydia (DeValle, Tannar) Balcom, brother of the late Richard Balcom and Robert Balcom.
Bill was born in Natick to the late G. Milo Balcom and Blanche Copithorne Balcom. He was a graduate of Natick High School Class of 1953 and was part of the Natick High School Championship Hockey Team in 1951.
After High School he attended North Wood Prep School, Post Grad. He also attended Boston College, then transferred to NorthEastern University where he graduated with his Bachelors Degree.
He was an avid hockey player and lover of ice cream. He spent much of his life coaching youth hockey “The Comets” and refereeing games. He could often be found at the rink. He loved to entertain with his late wife Lydia for the holidays and spent evenings watching the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots or any sports game going on. He hardly ever missed watching or discussing a game. Bill was also a lifetime member of the Natick Elks Lodge #1425.
Bill retired as a Sergeant from The Massachusetts State Police. He went on to work for the U.S Federal Marshall’s Office in Boston, retiring in 2000.
He is survived by his son, Bill Balcom and his wife Sharon and grandchildren Ben and Bethany of Southborough, MA, his son, Mark Balcom and his wife Carol and grandsons Michael, Lucas and Jacob of Sudbury, MA , his son, Brian Balcom and his wife Mardi Chadwick Balcom and granddaughters Jessica, Allison, Emma and Catie of Newburyport, MA, his son, Mike Balcom and his wife Karen and grandchildren Jordan, Jackson and Danny of Natick, MA, his daughter, Jeanne McGovern and her husband Charles and grandchildren, Wes and Molly of Falls Church, VA. His stepson; Tom Tannar and his wife Beth of FL, Steve Tannar and his wife Betty and step granddaughter Riley of Ct, his stepson Kurt Tannar and his wife Jessica and step granddaughter Cassandra of Hopkinton, MA, his stepson Ray Tannar and his wife Donna of Shrewsbury, MA, his step daughter Kristine Weddle and her husband Dan and step grandsons Dylan and Gavin of Natick, MA and several nieces and nephews and great-grandchildren also survive him.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service on Thursday May 17, at 10:00 A.M. from the John Everett and Sons Funeral Home 4 Park Street, at Natick Common. Interment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery, Natick.
Visiting hours will be held Wednesday evening 4:00-7:00 P.M. at the Funeral Home.
