Robert E. Carey
Retired Professor – Wentworth Institute of Technology

Robert E. (Bob) Carey, age 81, a Tewksbury resident for 76 years, passed away at home, surrounded by his family, on April 29, 2018.

Born in Boston on Christmas day, 1936, he was the son of the late Thomas A. Carey and the late Angelina (Mazzarella) Carey.

Bob attended the former Foster school and graduated from Tewksbury High School in 1954. He attended Lowell Tech and Northeastern University, where he earned his BS in Electronic Engineering. He enlisted in the US Air Force (1956), and graduated valedictorian at Syracuse University as a Russian linguist. He served his tour of duty in Turkey, where he made many close friendships and mastered the language.

On September 24, 1960, Bob married the love of his life, Bette Ann Ryan, with whom he would have celebrated 58 years of marriage in September 2018.

He worked at Wang Labs and Compugraphic before answering his true calling and becoming a professor of electronic engineering at Wentworth Institute of Technology in 1979, where he worked until he retired in 2002.

Bob was an avid tennis fan, but his greatest loves were his wife, his grandchildren, and his extensive family. In addition to his wife Bette, he is survived by three children;
Mark R. Carey and his wife Kim (Litchfield, NH), Roberta Carey Gammon and her husband David Gammon II (Nashua, NH) and Patricia Carey and her partner
Michael Aronov (Longboat Key, FL). He was pre-deceased by his son, Kevin R. Carey on June 3, 2017.

He is also survived by eight grandchildren; Katie Wendlandt and her husband
Chris Wendlandt (Litchfield, NH), Scott R. Carey (Nashua, NH), Cameron Carey (Tewksbury, MA), Tyler and Talon Carey (Dracut, MA), Kashka Gammon (Nashua, NH), Kaleigh Gammon (Tewksbury, MA) and David Gammon III (Nashua, NH), one great-grandchild; Luke Wendlandt, four brothers; Ernest T. Carey and his wife Fran, Richard C. “Curly” Carey and his partner Cathy Burbank, Russell Carey and his wife Lorraine, Carl Carey, and one sister; Angela Lochmandy and her husband Dan; also many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Mr. Carey was the brother of the late Kathleen, Patricia, Virginia “Jeannie”, Thomas, Paul, Leonard, Francis, Priscilla and Warren.

Calling hours are Sunday, May 6, from 3-7 p.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home,
16 Lee St., Tewksbury. His funeral procession will begin on Monday, May 7, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. at St. William’s Church, 1351 Main St., Rte. 38, Tewksbury. Interment will be held at a later date at Tewksbury Cemetery.
