New Bedford – Bert Ward, 82, of South Dartmouth died Monday, November 7, 2005 at New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home after a 3 years battle with PSP (Progressive Supra-nuclear Palsy). He was the husband of 60 years to Emma E. (Stringer) Ward.
He was born in Springhead, near Oldham, England, son of the late Herbert H. and Agnes (Wood) Ward, and emigrated to the United States in 1947 living in New Bedford until moving to South Dartmouth in 1990. Mr. Ward was educated in England and served 4 years as a leading seaman as an ASDIC (sonar) operator in the British Royal Navy, Submarine Service during WWII. Prior to his retirement in 1985, he worked at the BPM on Purchase St. for 11 years and at the Dartmouth Mall for a time before taking employment with the City of New Bedford. He worked with a crew out of the City Yard, mainly in the Historic District laying cobblestones, erecting tourist information signs and relocating the downtown Lighthouse. He enjoyed travel, returning to England several times. He was an active member of the former Whaler’s Drum and Bugle Corps, the Hazelwood Bowling Green Club and at one time the New Bedford Shuffle-board League.
Including his widow, he is survived by a son: William E. Ward and his wife Domciely of the Philippines; a daughter: Alice E. Kindstedt and her husband Donald of Winston-Salem, NC; 6 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews in England.
He was the brother of the late Walter Ward, Leonard Ward and Alice Ward.
Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be Friday at 11:00 A.M. at the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Rd., Westport.
Visitation will be 1 hour prior to service, Friday 10-11 A.M.
Interment will be in North Dartmouth Friends Cemetery, North Dartmouth.
