Westport – William A. Rodgers, 85, of Westport died Sunday, November 6, 2005 unexpectedly, at home.
He was born in Fall River, son of the late Thomas A. and Ella A. (Walsh) Rodgers, and had resided in Westport for the past 30 years. A United States Navy veteran, he served in WWII. Mr. Rodgers graduated from Providence College in 1951 and graduated from Boston College School of Social Work in 1953 and also attended Northeastern University.
In addition to the private practice in psychotherapy he held in Westport for many years, he worked for the Massachusetts Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children, was executive director of the Big Brother Association of Boston, executive director of Community Council of New Bedford, area director of Mental Health, New Bedford, director of social services Union Hospital, New Bedford and also a consultant for area nursing homes.
He served on the following boards: American Red Cross, New Bedford Chapter; Publicity Chairman, Greater New Bedford Concert Series; Volunteers of America; Education Council of Fall River; Board of Trustees Bristol Community College; Visiting Nurse Service, New Bedford Professional Advisory Committee; Alcohol Council of Fall River and New Bedford; and Big Brother Association of Boston.
He is survived by 2 brothers: Thomas A. Rodgers, Jr. of Fall River and most recently of Newport, RI and Retired Admiral Edward A. Rodgers of Bucksport, ME.
Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be from the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Rd., Westport, Thursday, November 10, 2005 at 9:00 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. George Church, Westport at 10:00 A.M.
Calling hours Wednesday 5 – 8 P.M.
Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River.
