Obituary

G. Vivian Berg of 8 Inwood Road, Auburn, died on Saturday, October 29, 2005 at The Life Care Center in Auburn after a long struggle with cancer.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth G. Berg, two daughters, Donna M. Berg, at home, Leah C. and her husband, Martin P. Bouthiller and their children, Ashley and Alicia, all of Worcester; a nephew, Richard C. Berg and his wife, Robbie of Urbana, Illinois, and their children, Ryan C. Berg, Robyn C. Berg, and Renee C., wife of Brandon Lee and their son, Toby; two cousins, Paul Israelson and his wife, Sandra of Sarasota, Florida, and John Granath of Brookville, Florida.

She was born February 28, 1932 in Worcester to the late Emil M. and Gunhild M. (Israelson) Mattson.

She was educated in the Worcester Public School System, and was a graduate of the Worcester School of Business Science and the Ward School of Airline Training. She was then employed as a private secretary to Capt. Eddie E. V. Rickenbacker, President and General Manager of Eastern Airlines in New York City. While living in New York City, she attended art classes at N.Y.U. and the Art Students League of Manhattan. Upon returning to Worcester, she worked as a legal secretary. In 1976 she opened her own art studio. Her work consisted of teaching adults in several media, commissioned art for New England Design Associates of Worcester, and paintings for Atlantis Art Gallery of Worcester and Shore Road Gallery of Ogonquit, Maine.

Her art is in numerous private, corporate, and public collections world wide and has received many awards. She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, the Auburn Historical Society, the American Society of Marine Artists, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and American Mensa, Ltd. Her biographic record appears in the Marquis Who's Who in America, Who's Who of American Women, and Who's Who in the World. Her outside activities included membership in several choirs and concert chorales as a chorister and soloist.

A Memorial Eucharistic Service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, November 5, 2005 at St. Matthews's Episcopal Church, 695 Southbridge Street, Worcester. Calling hours will be held prior to the service from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon at the church. Interment of ashes will be private. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Donations may be made in her memory to the St. Matthew's Memorial Fund or the U. Mass. Memorial Foundation, P.O. Box 2795, Worcester, MA 01613-9938. Nordgren Memorial Chapel is directing arrangements.
