Obituary

Allan Bessette, 68, of New Bedford died Saturday October 29, 2005 unexpectedly at. St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Joan F. (McHale) Bessette; they had been married for 48 years.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late William Bessette and Savaida (Brown) Forand Bessette, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.

He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, where he served as a collector.

Mr. Bessette was formerly employed the Continental Screw Company for 24 years and by the Aerovox Corporation for 11 years until his retirement.

Mr. Bessette served as a military police officer with the Massachusetts Army National Guard for 35 years. He began his service with the 1st 221th Field Artillery Unit in New Bedford, then was assigned to the 685th Military Police Company in Bourne, and later served with the 772nd Military Police Company in Taunton until his retirement in 1991 as a sergeant. He was activated to active duty with the U.S. Army during the Cuban Military Crisis. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Leonard P. Bessette of New Bedford; a grandson, Matthew Bessette; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Fred Bessette, Warren Bessette, William Bessette Jr., and Russell Forand.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, Wednesday November 2, 2005 at 8 AM. Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 9 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday November 1, 2005 from 5-9 PM. Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
