NEW BEDFORD -- Doris Hope (Spangenburg) Wing, 82, of Dartmouth died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005, at St. Luke's Hospital. She was the wife of Herbert Gilman Wing. They married in 1965.
Born in Scranton, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Everett and Maud (Bright) Spangenburg. She grew up in Clarks Summit, Pa., where she graduated from high school.
Mrs. Wing received a bachelor of science degree from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., in 1944, then studied for her jurisprudence degree, also at Dickinson; she graduated in 1946. In 1955, she received a master's degree in political science from Columbia University.
She was a member of the New York Bar, the District of Columbia Bar and the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States.
From 1947-48, she was a legal writer at the International Correspondence School in Scranton. From 1950-52, she was an assistant legal editor with Prentice-Hall in New York City.
Mrs. Wing then became associated with the prestigious law firm of Cadwalader, Wickersham and Taft in New York City as an attorney on legal staff from 1952-55. For the next 10 years, she was an attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice; part of that time, she was an assistant U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C.
From July 1966-July 1969, and July 1973-March 1983, she was an attorney on the legal staff of the Department of Housing and Urban Development in Washington, D.C.
She accompanied her husband, a diplomat with the U.S. Department of State, to his position in Sri Lanka as first secretary to the American Embassy (1969-73), and after her retirement, she joined him in Geneva, where he was embassy counselor.
She retired from federal service in 1983.
Survivors include her widower; a sister, Carol Batdorf of Wyomissing, Pa.; two stepsons, Andrew G. Wing of Wayne, Pa., and John H. Wing of Norwood, Pa.; a stepgranddaughter; numerous nieces and nephews; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday, October 24, 2005, at the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St. New Bedford, Ma. with friends being received from 1-2 p.m. prior to her service. Burial will be in South Dartmouth Cemetery.
