Obituary

Edwin L. Andrews, Jr., 86, of New Bedford died Friday November 24, 2017 at home after a period of declining health. He was the husband of Rita T. (Frenette) Andrews.
Born in Vineyard Haven, the son of the late Edwin L. and Valerie (Chayka) Andrews, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.
Mr. Andrews was formerly employed as a corrections officer at MCI Bridgewater, later transferring to the Forestry Camp in North Adams and MCI Plymouth until his retirement.
During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of American Legion, Post 1.
He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. He also had been a communicant of the former Sacred Heart Parish, where he was active in many parish activities including the St. Vincent dePaul Society.
He is survived by his wife, Rita; two children, Deborah Houle and her husband Donald, and Kevin Andrews and his companion, Joyce Varao, all of New Bedford; a brother, Robert Andrews of Mashpee; a sister, Pearl Sylvia of East Falmouth; three grandsons, Patrick Andrews, Jonathan Andrews, and Nicholas Andrews; a great-granddaughter, Olivia; a step-great-granddaughter, Alexis; and many nieces and nephews.
His Funeral will be held on Tuesday November 28th at 10 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 11 AM. A private burial service will take place at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting hours will be on Monday November 27th from 4-8 PM.
