TEWKSBURY: John F. “Jack” Dougherty, age 75, a resident of Tewksbury for 67 years, died Sunday, October 16, 2005 at the Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Lowell.
He was the husband of Rita M. (Dugas) Dougherty, who died June 1, 1996.
Born in Lowell on May 15, 1930, he was the son of the late Bernard F. and Mary E. (Connaughton) Dougherty.
Mr. Dougherty attended the former Foster School in Tewksbury and graduated from the former Keith Academy of Lowell in 1948. Following graduation, he attended the Wentworth Institute of Technology, where he majored in architectural construction. In addition, Mr. Dougherty attended evening courses in the management development program at Northeastern University.
He served during the Korean War in the U.S. Marine Corps with the Second Marine Division. Mr. Dougherty was honorably discharged from active duty on April 8, 1952 at Camp Lejeune, NC having earned the rank of Sergeant.
Following his military service, he began a career in the residential and commercial construction industry. Mr. Dougherty was employed as the clerk of works during the construction of the Tewksbury Memorial High School in 1958. He later co-founded a residential construction company known as Dougherty & Myhr General Contractors of Tewksbury. In addition, Mr. Dougherty was employed as a carpenter during the construction of the Harvard Coop and the John Hancock Building. Prior to his retirement, he served as project manager of new construction for the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority’s relocation of the Orange Line and during South Station Renovation Project.
Mr. Dougherty was a lifelong communicant of St. Williams Parish, where in his youth he served as an alter boy.
He enjoyed many activities including; reading, tinkering with cars, swimming, vacationing at Hampton and Seabrook beach, dancing, legal research, local history, visiting with friends and exploring his Irish heritage.
He is survived by one son; Craig J. Dougherty and his wife Jazmin of Upton; four daughters; Karen A. Currier and her husband Michael of Melrose, Nancy J. Prentice and her husband Larry of Chelmsford, Jean F. D. Campbell and her husband Christopher of Windham, NH and Anne M. Monahan and her husband Shawn of Chelmsford; one brother; Bernard F. Dougherty, Jr. and his wife Irene of Alton, NH; thirteen grandchildren; Rachel L., Shane S., Jade E. and Preston J. Dougherty, Jonathan D., Ryan D. and Tyler D. Prentice, Corey C., Trevor D. and Mitchell J.D. Campbell, Madeline R., Kerry R. and Christina L. Monahan; also many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Dougherty was the brother of the late Catherine “Harley” Coyne.
Calling hours Friday, October 21st, 4-9 p.m., at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. Funeral Saturday, October 22nd, 9 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Williams Church, 1351 Main St., Rte. 38, Tewksbury. Interment at Tewksbury Cemetery.
