Middletown, RI – Adelbert F. “Del” Gifford, 81, of Little Compton, RI died October 9, 2005 at Forest Farms Health Care Center. He was the husband of Jeannette R. (Belanger) Gifford.
Mr. Gifford was born in Westport, MA, son of the late Walter and Dellaphine E. (Kirby) Gifford, and resided in Little Compton most of his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He was employed for 29 years as a machine operator by Firestone Tire and Rubber Co., Fall River, MA. He also worked as a custodian for the J.F. Wilbur School in Little Compton and was a former police officer in Little Compton. He was a member and Past Commander of the American Legion Post #37, Little Compton; he served on the Town Council in Little Compton for 6 terms; and was elected and served many years as Town Sergeant.
In addition to his widow, he is survived by a son: Richard W. Gifford of Hartford, CT; a brother: Norman Gifford of St. Cloud, FL; 2 sisters: Hazel Cahill of Middletown, RI and Evelyn Norman of Westport, MA; and several nieces & nephews.
He was brother of the late Winifred Sharples, Walter Gifford, Leroy Gifford, and Wendell Gifford.

Funeral service on Friday, October 14, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. at the POTTER FUNERAL HOME, 81 Reed Road, Westport.
Interment in Maple Grove Cemetery, Westport.
