WORCESTER - Elbert "Al" L. Houghton, 77, of 36 Claridge Road died Sunday June 9 at home after an illness.
He leaves a wife of 32 years Virginia M. (Gallo) Houghton of Worcester; four sons Mike A. Houghton of Oakham, Scott G. Houghton of Dudley, Steven P. Houghton of North Grosvernordale, CT; and Kevin J. Houghton of Worcester; a daughter Kimberly Ann Snediker of Grafton; a brother Robert Houghton of Patterson, CA; two sisters Charlotte Raudio of California and Bertie Barto of Washington; 12 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his adopted mother Mary Clark, a brother Charles Houghton Jr. and a sister Helen "Tooty" Farrell. Mr. Houghton was born in Worcester son of Charles and Mildred (Williams) Houghton.
Mr. Houghton was a Navy Veteran serving during World War II.
Mr. Houghton served on the USS Plunkett and recieved the following medals while serving during World War II: WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African Theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal, American Theatre Medal.
He worked for 37 years as a Machine Operator at Norton Company retiring in 1990.
Mr. Houghton was a member of ther Greendale People's Church, Worcester Surfcasting Club, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Harold N. Keith American Legion Post 204 in West Boylston, 32nd Degree Mason, Morning Star Lodge AFAM and the Navy Reserves. He also was an avid fisherman and hunter.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday June 18 at 4 PM in Greendale People's Church 25 Francis Street, Worcester. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital 51 Blossom Street Boston, MA 02114 or to a charity of the donors choice.
