Cynthia ‘Cindy’ Cook was born to Chet Cook and Catherine (Gavigan) Cook on September 4, 1965 in Long Island, New York. The family lived in Florida while Cindy was very young. After a couple of years, the family moved to Chester's home town of Provincetown, MA. By the time Cindy was in junior high school, the family had made another move to Windham, Maine. Cindy attended high school in Windham, while spending her summers in Provincetown waitressing at Tip for Tops'n, the family restaurant.
After high school, Cindy attended the University of Maine. Attaining a degree upon graduation, she found work in Portland, Maine. She could not deny her love for the Cape, however, and soon returned to Provincetown.
Cindy was employed by Duarte, Downey, and Dearborn Insurance Company. She became manager and continued working there for thirty years while also waitressing at Tips for Tops'n. Cindy continued working even as she bravely battled for her own life against brain cancer.
At times Cindy considered returning to Maine. But, as fate would have it, she would instead meet her future husband, Mark Travers of Provincetown, and start a family with the birth of twins, Chet and Layla. Being a mother was something Cindy had prayed for and worked very hard towards. At the birth of her twins she was thrilled to be a mom. Her family became her passion, yet she still made room for her wonderful friends from Maine to Florida.
While she was healthy Cindy enjoyed travel. She visited Ireland, London, Italy, Hawaii, and Mexico, among other places. Where Cindy went she brought her own sunshine. She had a smile that could warm a cold world. She made friends everywhere she went. Cindy was accepting of all people and spoke ill of no one-ever. She had a special way of letting you know you were loved. Affectionately known as "Lulabelle" or " Little Cindy Lou Who," Cindy was a sweetheart.
Even deathly ill Cindy was always worried about not doing enough for the other people in her life. Among many other good deeds, she continued to bake her amazing linguica bread for friends and family for as long as she was physically capable and worried about them not eating enough when she could no longer stand. That's the kind of person Cindy was. Even as she lay dying, she would only think of others and how she could help them.
Cindy left us this August 27, after a 21/2year battle with brain cancer, surrounded by family and friends at Wingate Nursing Home in Brewster. Cindy leaves behind her children Chet and Layla, her husband Mark Travers, her brother Chet, her mother Catherine, her stepdaughters Julie and Leslie, a very large, loving family, and her many, many great friends. Cindy was loved by all who had the distinct pleasure of knowing her. She will be sorely missed.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, September 30 at St. Peter the Apostle Church, Prince St, Provincetown to celebrate Cindy’s life.
If desired, donations in her memory may be made to the Provincetown Rescue Squad, PO Box 109, Provincetown, MA 02657.
