Obituary

Charles J Hemmingsen, 86, a retired Commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II and former captain of the USS Massey & LST Mt. Vernon, died October 3, 2005. Born in Racine, Wisconsin, he was the son of the late T. Charles and Pearl (Pfirstenhaefer). After more than twenty years of active service with the Navy, he was honorably discharged with advanced degrees in Naval War Correspondence for logistics, strategy and tactics. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland with a B.S. degree in Military Science and the Naval School of Justice, majoring in Naval Law. He was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal (Europe).

He was the beloved husband of Margaret (Fitch) Hemmingsen of Winchester and the devoted father of Charles F. and his wife Jane of Hollis, NH, Karin J. Hemmingsen, M.D. of Canton, MA and Daria Hemmingsen of North Attelboro, MA. He is also survived by a sister, Janet Bartos of Grafton, WI.

Mr. Hemmingsen was very active in the Winchester community. He was a former treasurer of the Winchester Scholarship Committee and the ABC House. He volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program and at Winchester Hospital. He was an active member of the Parish of the Epiphany and an avid stamp collector.

A Memorial Service will be held in the Parish of the Epiphany, 70 Church St., Winchester on Sunday Oct. 16th at 2PM. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the above-mentioned church Winchester, MA 01890.
