Sister M. Carol (Maureen) Clifford, 69, a Sister of Mercy for 50 years, died Monday, October 3, 2005, at Warde Health Center in Windham, N.H., after a brief illness. A native of Charlestown, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Catherine (Curran) Clifford.
Sister Carol received her B.A. in elementary education from Mt. St. Mary College in Hooksett, N.H. and her M.A. in elementary education from Salem State College in Salem, Mass.
For many years she devoted herself to teaching and administration in Catholic schools in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. In New Hampshire she taught at St. Patrick, St. Raphael, and St. Catherine Schools in Manchester; St. Mary in Franklin; St. Patrick in Berlin; and Holy Trinity in Laconia. She served as principal at St. Mary School in Claremont and St. Patrick School in Portsmouth. In Massachusetts, Sister Carol taught at St. Mary Star of the Sea School in East Boston and St. Theresa School in West Roxbury. Her most recent ministry was at Holy Trinity School in West Harwich, Mass. where she was principal from 1994 until illness prevented her from returning in September.
Sister Carol was the beloved sister of Barbara LaPorta of Medford, Mass.; two brothers and sisters-in law: Charles A. and wife Ronnie Clifford of Burlington, Mass.; Edmund D. and
wife Franny Clifford of Wakefield, Mass. She was the beloved aunt of several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and cousin of Joseph and Jackie Folkard.
Friends may call at the Sisters of Mercy Warde Health
Center, 21 Searles Road, Windham, New Hampshire, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5. A prayer service will be held in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, Sisters of Mercy in Windham at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 6. Burial will be at Saint Joseph Cemetery, Bedford, N.H.
