John L. McNamara

TEWKSBURY: John L. McNamara, age 87, a resident of Tewksbury for 57 years, passed away at home in the care of his family and Circle Home Hospice on Monday, August 7, 2017.
He was the beloved husband of Julia A. (Malagrifa) McNamara, with whom he would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on August 10, 2017.
Born in Lowell on May 19, 1930, he was the son of the late Joseph McNamara and the late Anne (McDermott) McNamara.
John was raised in Lowell, attended Lowell schools and graduated from the former Keith Academy in 1947.
Following high school, he attended St. Anselm College, where he received his B.A. Degree in 1951.
Later that year, John enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War.
Following his honorable discharge from active duty, he entered Boston University to pursue his Master’s Degree which he received in 1955. In 1959, he was awarded a Juris Doctorate from Suffolk University Law School while teaching science and math in the Groton school system.
Prior to his retirement, John was employed as a Contract Administrator by the Honeywell Corporation in Waltham and Billerica for 25 years.
He was a former member of the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers, and the Lowell American Legion.
John enjoyed many activities especially attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, and following all the Boston sport’s teams.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, John L. McNamara, Jr. and his wife Tricia, of West Newbury, and Joanne Bourgea and her husband Steven, of Tewksbury; six grandchildren, Erin McNamara of Portland, ME, Corey and Kelsi McNamara, of West Newbury, and Joseph, Tyler, and Owen Bourgea of Tewksbury; also many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
John was the brother of the late Alice Tucker, Anna Roddy, Teresa Machado, James, Joseph, and Edward McNamara.
Calling hours are Wednesday, Aug. 9, from 5-8 p.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 10, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
