Walter J. Wells, Jr., 80 of Manchester, NH died Tuesday September 27, 2005 in the Pleasant Valley Nursing Center, Derry, NH. Mr. Wells was born in Boston, MA on July 13, 1925 a son of the late Walter J. and Evelyn (Mendum) Wells. He had been a longtime resident of Derry and Londonderry prior to his brief residence in Manchester. Mr. Wells served with the US Navy during WWII. He was a member of the American Legion Post 79 of Manchester and served as Past Commander of Post 165 in Belmont, MA. He had also been active with the American Legion on a district and state level. When his children were younger he devoted many years to coaching Little League, Babe Ruth and American Legion baseball in Londonderry and Burlington, MA.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Phyllis A. (Delaney) Wells of Manchester, four sons, Wally Wells of Merrimack, NH, Jim Wells of Derry, Steve Wells and his wife Christina of Mt. Airy, MD, John Wells and his wife Christine of Plainville, CT, two daughters, Marsha Irvin and her husband Don of Belmont, NH, Mary Villemaire and her husband Rick of Weare, NH, 14 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one brother, Kenneth Wells of Boise, MD, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Genevieve Murphy.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday September 30th at 10:00am in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 26 Crystal Ave., Derry. Burial will follow in the NH State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH. Friends may call on Thursday from 5 - 8pm in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry.
