John H. Arthur, Age 86, of Milton, formerly of Canton, died on 6-13-17. Beloved husband of 59 years of Janet M. (Fuller) Arthur, formerly of Attleboro. Loving father of Susan E. DeProspero and her husband Louis of Vernon CT, James B. of Lakeville, Steven E. of Canton, Gordon H. and his wife Kelly of Canton, and Dana E. and his wife Gina of Natick. Loving grandfather of Jake, Brittany, Joseph, Danielle, Lindsey, Jennifer, Louis, Emily, and Brian. Also survived by his brother Harold F. Arthur and his wife Pauline of Littleton, his sister Marjorie Lamkin of Wilmington, and many loving nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his sister Beverly French.
John graduated from Milton H.S., Class of 1948. He earned his BS in Civil Engineering from Tufts University and his MS in Civil Engineering from Northeastern University. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
John worked for the environmental engineering firm of Metcalf & Eddy for his entire career from 1952 to 2004, and was Senior Vice President of M&E International when he retired. He was a registered Professional Engineer in 11 states, the District of Columbia, Quebec Province, and Singapore.
John was a life member of ASCE, and a member of the Water Environment Federation, the Society of American Military Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, and the American Public Works Association. He specialized in the management of large wastewater treatment plant projects, including projects in Washington DC, Chicago IL, New York City, Montreal Canada, and Boston Harbor. The ten years preceding his retirement were spent on international work in Egypt, Thailand, Korea, and Singapore.
John was active in the community. He served on the Canton Planning Board and was active in his church in Canton, serving as a Deacon for many years and as Moderator. He loved the out-of-doors; the Blue Hills were his playground growing up. John was an Eagle Scout, served as a scoutmaster for a troop in Milton, and was active with scout troops in Canton. He enjoyed camping, fishing and gardening, and loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and friends. He was active in Fuller Village, the community where he has lived for the past 12 years. John and Janet were rarely without each other and were inseparable as they grew older. His favorite hobby was ballroom dancing with Janet. He will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Relatives and friends invited to attend a funeral service at the Congregational Church of Canton Saturday morning at 11. Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home 455 Washington St. Canton Saturday morning prior to the service from 9:00 to 10:30. Burial Milton Cemetery.
