Obituary

Alfred J. Makein, Sr. of Plymouth MA., formally from Whitman MA., passed away on May 26, 2017 surrounded by his beloved family after a period of declining health. He was 89. He was born on May 18, 1928 in Bronx, New York, and was the son of the late James William Makein and Dora (Wetzler) Makein of Abington.

After moving to Massachusetts in 1941, he attended the Whitman Public Schools and joined the United States Air Force in 1947. Serving as a flight engineer, Mr. Makein attained the rank of Sgt. and was stationed at Hickam Field, Hawaii and Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts.

Shortly after discharge from the Air Force, he met the love of his life, Marie Tobin of Whitman. They married in November of 1950 at the Holy Ghost Church and settled in the Town of Whitman where they raised 5 children. They were married for 60 years.

Mr. Makein was employed at the Fore River Ship Yard in Quincy, MA. for over 30 years. He was a master pipe fitter and supervisor of the pipe shop. He was very proud of his work and his families’ heritage in the ship building industry. When the shipyard closed, Mr. Makein joined the management team at Clean Harbors Corporation as the Director of Maintenance of the Weymouth HAZMAT Transfer Station, a position he held until his retirement.

Al and Marie Makein enjoyed boating and salt water fishing in their retirement, spending many wonderful weekends on their boat “Make-in Waves” based at the Bourne Marina.

Mr. Makein is survived by his children and their spouses, Alfred J. Makein, Jr. and his wife Denise of Wareham, MA., Thomas Makein and his wife Dale of Plymouth, MA., Stephen Makein and his wife Donna of Whitman, MA., Brian Makein and his wife Justine of Abington, MA. and Charlotte (Makein) Hill and her husband Alan of Plymouth MA. Mr. Makein is survived by 14 Grandchildren and 15 Great Grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Robert and his wife Connie of Chehalis, WA. and his sister Dorothy Gracia of Taunton, MA. as well as many nieces and nephews. Marie Makein predeceased her husband in 2010

Family and friends are welcome to attend calling hours at the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman, MA. 02382, Wednesday, May 31 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.

His funeral services will be held at 9:45 a.m. from the Chapel, a Christian Funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 1st at the Holy Ghost Church in Whitman, MA. Burial will follow in the St. James Cemetery

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Marie Makein.
