GEORGE A. COLE, JR., age 90, of Hingham, died on Tuesday, Sept. 20th at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth after a brief illness. Mr. Cole was born in Hingham and was a lifelong resident of the town. He was educated at Derby Academy in Hingham, was a 1934 graduate of the Brown & Nichols School in Cambridge and graduated from Harvard University in 1938. During his college years, Mr. Cole taught sailing during the summer seasons in Cooperstown, New York. A World War II veteran, he served as a First Lieutenant with the United States Army and was stationed in England and Iceland. He was currently a member of the Edward Ball Cole Legion Post in Hingham.
Mr Cole was an insurance agent by profession and in 1958 purchased the John Carnes Insurance Agency, in 1961 purchased the Harold Barnes Insurance Agency and formed the George A. Cole Insurance Agency in Hingham, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1983. He also was a director of the Hingham Mutual Fire Insurance Company from 1968 until his death.
He was an avid golfer, sailor, bike rider and was a well known volunteer at the Hingham Public Library.
He was the former husband of Virginia (Vaughan) Cole and father of George A. Cole, III and his wife Frances of Hingham, Cynthia Heslam and her husband Michael of Braintree and Nancy Barges and her husband William of Duxbury. Brother of the late Morton Cole and the late Elizabeth McRoberts. Also survived by 12 grandchildren and 3 great grand-children.
A Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday, Oct. 1st at 2 PM at the Second Parish Church, 685 Main St. (Rt. 228), Hingham, MA 02043.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Second Parish Church.
The interment is to be private.
