Obituary


Dr. Edward J. Power Ph. D., 84, Professor Emeritus from Boston College School of Education, died Monday Sept 12, 2005 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital Needham Campus.
Born in Wells, MN, he graduated from St. John’s College in Minnesota where he played baseball and basketball. He received his Masters and Ph. D. from Notre Dame. He served as a Master Sergeant with the U.S. Army 86th Infantry Division during WW II, and served in the European and Pacific theatres. He was a Professor of Education at Boston College from 1961 until 1991 and professor emeritus at BC since 1991. Dr. Power also authored 16 books including “Main Currents in the History of Education”, “Evolution of Educational Doctrine”, The Transit of Learning”, ”A Legacy of Learning” and the first general histories of Catholic higher Education in the United States: “A History of Catholic Higher Education in the United States” in 1958 and “Catholic Higher Education in America” in 1971.
Husband of the late Helen (Salese) Power he is survived by his children Thomas E. Power of Cheyenne WY, Richard D. Power of Palm Beach FL, Suzanne P. Wilcox of Dover, and Maryanne Sidebotham of Amherst, NH. He was the brother of the late Anne Maynard, and is also survived by 7 grandchildren.
Relatives and friends will gather at the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave. (Exit 19 B off Rte 128) Needham on Fri Sept 16 at 9 AM and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph Church, Needham at 10 AM. Interment with Military Honors will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Needham. Visiting hours will be in the funeral home on Thurs from 4-8 PM.
In lieu of flowers contributions in Dr. Edward J. Power’s memory can be made to the Lynch School of Education, Boston College, Campion Hall 101, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467 ATTN Fr. Joseph O’Keefe.
