Fall River, MA – Chief Warrant Officer Albert J. Ryzner, USCG (Ret.),83, of N. Dartmouth, MA died Tuesday, August 30, 2005 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Ruth F. (Farrelly) Bywell.
He was born in Duryea, PA, the oldest son of the late John S. and Julia (Belko) Ryzner. Chief Warrant Officer Ryzner was a 1940 graduate of Duryea High School in Duryea, PA and a graduate of Fisher Junior College of New Bedford, MA, with an Associate Degree in Business Management in 1978, plus several service schools.
He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard on November 4, 1942 and retired with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer on July 31, 1969. During his career in the Coast Guard, he served aboard several C.G. Cutters and shore stations. His last assignment was aboard the Coast Guard Cutter ESCANABA (WHEC-64) out of New Bedford, MA. He saw combat action during WWII aboard the USS LST 829 (Coast Guard Manned) in the South Pacific, Leyete, P.I., Okinawa, le Shima, Geruma Shima and Nagoya, Japan.
He took part in landing occupation troops in Nagasaki a week after the “A” Bomb was dropped. He also served in the Coast Guard during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He earned several combat ribbons: Navy Amphibious Shoulder Patch (WWII), US Coast Guard Cutterman’s Badge, Combat Action Ribbon, Coast Guard Good Conduct W/4 Stars, American Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific W/1 star, WWII Victory, Navy Occupation W/Japan Clasp, National Defense W/1 star, Coast Guard Sea Service Ribbon, Philippine Liberation W/1 star and Philippine Presidential Unit Citation.
He belonged to several veteran’s organizations: Veterans of Foreign Wars (Life Member) and a Past Commander of VFW Whaling City Post 3196 of New Bedford, MA, VFW Post 6347 of Mt. Jewett, PA, The American Legion Post, PA, The Retired Officers Association (Life Member) and Past President of the South Eastern New England Chapter of TROA at Newport, RI and Past President of TROA Bucktail Chapter where he also served as Treasurer and was a Life Member; Coast Guard Combat Veterans Association (Life Member), Retired Enlisted Association, National Uniformed Services Association, U.S. Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officers Association, Amvets Post 62, New Bedford, MA, American Legion Post 145 Westport, MA VFW Post 8502, Westport, MA, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 207 plus several other veterans associations.
He served as Notary Public for several years and served on the Township Planning Board in Lafayette Twp., PA.
Including his widow, he is survived by: 2 sons: John P. Ryzner of Old Forge, PA and Albert L. Ryzner of Pittston Twp., PA; 3 step-daughters: Deborah Seibert of Bristol, CT, Lee Leahy of Acushnet, MA and Penny Pepin of New Bedford, MA; a step-son: Larry N. Bywell of Swansea, MA; a brother: John J. Ryzner of Rockaway, NJ; a sister: Bernadine Kaczmarczyk of Duryea, PA; and 9 grandchildren.
He was the brother of the late Martin A. Ryzner and Clara Ryzner.
Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be from the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Rd., Westport, Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at 9:30 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. George Church, Westport at 10:30 A.M.
Calling hours Monday 4 – 7 P.M.
Interment in Bourne National Cemetery, Bourne.
