John M. "Johnny Trombone" Santos, 91, of New Bedford died August 29, 2005 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.
He was the husband of Adeline N. (Lessa) Santos.
Born in Sao Vicente, Cape Verde, the son of the late Manuel and Mary (Custodio) Santos, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church, where he served as an usher and was a friend of the pastor, Fr. Stan.
Mr. Santos was formerly employed as a construction worker for Loranger Construction for many years until his retirement.
He was a member of the Cape Verdean Ultra Marine Band Club. He enjoyed playing the trombone and played with the "Sky Liners".
Mr. Santos was a devoted father and provider for his children.
Survivors include his wife; 7 sons, John M. Santos, Jr., Robert L. Santos, Russell A. Santos, Michael J. Santos, Richard D. Santos and David B. Santos, all of New Bedford, and Stephen W. Santos of Vacaville, CA; 2 daughters, Joan A. "Sookie" Pina and Karen Medina, both of New Bedford; a brother, Joseph Santos of Nantucket; a sister Mary Semedo of Connecticut; 17 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
He was the grandfather of the late Mark J. Santos and Sherry A. Pina.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Thursday, September 1st at 8 AM. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Visiting hours Wednesday, August 31st 4-8 PM.
Interment St. John's Cemetery.
