Helen Hagey McCartin, age 106, died peacefully at Wingate in Harwich, MA on January 19, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary Hagey of East Hartford, CT.
She graduated from East Hartford High School in 1928. While living in East Hartford she worked at Connecticut General and was active in Daughters of Isabella and began her career of teaching dance.
She married Francis McCartin in 1936 and they relocated to New London, CT where she operated the Helen Hagey School of Dance in New London, Westbrook and Ivoryton for several years. She was employed at the Underwater Sound Lad for 18 years. At age 81 Helen started a Senior Tap Group, the Water Mackettes who entertained at nursing homes and performed at numerous local events. She was President of the New London Kiwanis Club and served on their board for many years and was a member of St. Pau’s Church in Waterford and twice President of their Guild.
Helen was a big supporter of her husband’s Alma Mater, Holy Cross College and attended the Class of 1926 Reunion until she was 98. She proudly displayed her license plate of HC26 until she stopped driving at age 100.
She is survived by her son, Jack McCartin of Cape Cod, MA and her daughter Mary Jo Weiss of Stamford, CT; five grandchildren, Bonnie Moore, Kerrie Lowery, John McCartin, Greg Weiss and Randy Weiss; 10 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter.
Helen was predeceased by her husband, Attorny Francis McCartin, her sister Maragret Daley and her son-in-law Jeffry Weiss.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
