James P. Mitchell, 70

Dateline: Norton, MA

James P. Mitchell, age 70, of Norton, passed away in the presence of his loving family, at the VA Medical Center in West Roxbury, on Friday, January 20, 2017. He was the beloved husband of Diane M. (Carita) Mitchell, to whom he was wed on May 21, 1972.

Born in Brockton, MA on September 13, 1946, he was a loving son of the late James E. Mitchell and the late Marie J. (Lepore) Mitchell-Barker.

Jim grew up in Whitman, was a 1964 graduate of Whitman-Hanson Regional High School and attended Graham Junior College in Boston. During the Vietnam War, he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy. Following two years of faithful service, he was honorably discharged on December 20, 1967 with the rank of DT3.

Mr. Mitchell was a retired General Manager at the Independent Nail Co. in Taunton where he had worked for nineteen years. He also worked as a Flight Instructor at the Mansfield Municipal Airport.

Jim was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Norton and was a member of the Mansfield Fish & Game. He had formerly filmed Norton High School football games for thirteen years and served for two years as a former president for Norton Little League.

Jim loved spending time with his adoring family and grandchildren. His hobbies included fishing and target shooting.

In addition to his beloved wife of nearly 45 years, he is survived by his devoted sons James E. Mitchell and his wife Jeannette of Southborough and Gary F. Mitchell and his wife Lindsay of Norton. He was the dear brother of Joan Mahoney of Duxbury, the cherished grandfather of James, Cassidy, Owen, Jack and Anna, and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Services along with burial with military honors will be held privately at the convenience of his family.

Visiting hours have been omitted and those wishing may remember Jim with a donation in his memory made to the ALS Association of Massachusetts, 315 Norwood park South, 1st Floor, Norwood, MA 02062.
