DR. JULES V. HALLUM
MYSTIC: Jules Verne Hallum, of Mystic Run, Mystic, died on Tuesday, August 16th at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, CT
Born in the Midwest, Dr. Hallum did his undergraduate work at the University of Minnesota and received his doctoral degree in Chemistry from the University of Iowa. For some years he worked at the Mellon Institute in Pittsburgh, PA, specializing in the properties of carbon black and other carbon derivatives.
In the early 1960’s he became interested in virology and began a fellowship with the research group of J.S. Youngner in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, subsequently receiving an appointment to the faculty. During his stay in Pittsburgh he participated in the early work on interferon. He made significant contributions to the understanding of the induction of interferon by non-viral stimuli and the diversity of molecular species of this viral inhibitor. His research projects also included studies of the properties of thermal resistant mutants of polioviruses.
Dr. Hallum left Pittsburgh to take a tenured position as Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Tulane University in New Orleans. He later moved to the University of Oregon Medical School in Portland as Chairman of the Department of Microbiology. When he retired from this position in 1990, he became the first Director of the new Office of Scientific Integrity at the National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, created to bring fairness to investigations of scientific misconduct. Dr. Hallum served as OSI Director from 1990 to 1992, giving an important intellectual leadership in this controversial arena. He chose to retire from Government and return to his love of writing poetry and fiction, and to enjoy his family.
Dr. Hallum is survived by his wife, Ann Van Es Hallum, presently of Mystic, Connecticut, and his three children of his previous marriage to Phyllis Hallum, deceased: Marcus V. Hallum, of Torrington, CT; Jessica Wimmer, of Urbandale, Iowa, and Elizabeth Hallum of Reading, England. He has six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
