Vernon L. Pettis, Jr., 70, of Ocilla, Georgia, died Thursday, December 1, 2016, at Irwin County Hospital, in Ocilla, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held 4 PM, Sunday, December 4, 2016, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Ocilla, with Brother Joey Veal and The Rev. Dr. Danny V. Ray officiating. Interment will follow in the Holt Cemetery, in Irwin County, Georgia. The family will receive friends Saturday evening, from 6 PM to 8 PM, at the funeral home in Ocilla.
Mr. Pettis was born February 12, 1946, in Irwin County, Georgia, to the late Lenton Vernon & Eva Bates Pettis. He lived in the community all of his life and graduated from the Irwin County High School. Mr. Pettis was owner and operator of Fitzgerald Contractors, specializing in concrete work. He was an avid fisherman and an avid Irwin County Indian Sports fan. He loved dachshunds. Mr. Pettis was a member of CrossPointe Baptist Church in Ocilla, where he was an ordained deacon.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sharon G. Pettis of Ocilla; a son, Tommy & Lisa Pettis of Ocilla and a daughter, Dana & Chris Paulk of Ocilla; six grandchildren: Brian Pettis, Ariel Lea & Matt Roberts, Austin Pettis, Tucker Paulk, Connor Paulk and Cooper Paulk; three sisters: Sara Grace Paulk of Ocilla, Carolyn & Jimmy Brown of Ocilla and Patricia Phillips & Billy of Hawkinsville.
