Scituate, MA – John Doherty, Sr., 88, of Westport, died Monday, August 15, 2005 at Cardigan Nursing Home after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Thelma L. (Seveney) Doherty and the former husband of the late Mary E. (Orr) Doherty.
He was born in Fall River, son of the late Daniel D. and Caroline V. (Mason) Doherty, and had resided in Westport for most of his life. He was a Communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, Westport. Mr. Doherty served in the Massachusetts State Guard. Prior to his retirement in 1972, he was a civilian fire captain for the Newport, RI Naval Base. He enjoyed working on the Westport River.
He is survived by 2 sons: John Doherty, Jr. of Berkley, MA and Paul Doherty of Fall River; a step-daughter: Sharon M. Walker of Fall River; a sister: Alice F. Costa of Fall River; 2 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; 1 step- great grandchild; a dear friend: Marion Legasse of Westport; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Daniel Doherty.
Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be from the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, Westport, Friday, August 19, 2005 at 8:30 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Church, Westport at 10:00 A.M.
Calling hours Thursday 4 – 8 P.M.
Interment in Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport.
