Obituary

LOWELL—Edward Balkus, 83 years old, died early Thursday afternoon at the Fairhaven Nursing Home. He was the husband of Lucy E. (McDonald) Balkus, with whom he celebrated 54 years of marriage in June of this year.

He was born in Dracut, on September 29, 1921, a son of the late Tofil and Mary (Wiczkaczkiute) Balkus, and was a graduate of Dracut Schools.

Mr. Balkus served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and received a Purple Heart for injuries during the war. He had been employed as a Tool Cutter and Grinder by the former Western Electric Company. He held membership in the Telephone Pioneer’s of America.

Surviving him besides his wife are a two daughters and one son-in-law: Cynthia Ann and Donald Polsi, of Lowell; and Linda Bird, of Greenfield; five grandchildren: Ryan W. Bump, of Lowell; Christopher A. Polsi, of Lowell; Tracey and her husband Danny Brooks, of Charlemont; Lynne Polsi, of Billerica; and Elaine and her husband John Keough, of Dunstable; three great grandchildren: Justen and Matthew Brooks and Connell Keough; a sister: Monica Madden, of Tewksbury; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Mary and Frank White, of Lowell; and Tom and Gerry McDonald, of Florida; also many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was the brother of the late Joseph and John Balkus.

At his request there will be no calling hours. Relatives and friends are invited to his committal service Friday August 12th at 1 PM at St. Patrick Cemetery, Lowell. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Greater Lowell VNA; P.O. Box 1965; Lowell, MA 01853.
