Laconia-----Charles H. Plimpton 92, of Laconia passed away at home Sunday, September 18, 2016 surrounded by loving family.
Charlie was born in Gilsum, NH on April 14, 1924 to Charles Carroll and Irena (Alexander) Plimpton. He played baseball and varsity basketball at Keene High School, serving as co-captain for the 1943-1944 season. Following High School, Charlie served two years in Germany with the US Army. He attended Keene Teachers College where he met his future wife Lois Flint. He participated in varsity basketball and was elected the first mayor of Keene Teachers College. Charlie graduated in 1951. He and Lois were married June 20, 1952.
Mr. P., as he was known to many, received his YMCA Directors Certificate from Springfield College in 1956 and began his career working at the Keene YMCA. While working for the Manchester YMCA, he spent five years as the Director of Camp Mi-Te-Na in Alton, NH. He finished out his 32 year career as Executive Director of the Lakes Region YMCA in Laconia. Upon his retirement, Laconia Mayor Alan Wilson proclaimed April 17, 1983 as Charlie Plimpton Recognition Day.
Charlie began his second career that same year joining NH Community Technical College (Lakes Region Community College) as Evening Program Coordinator. While at LRCC, he received an Associates in Arts degree for his years of dedicated service. Charlie retired at the age of 85.
Charlie and Lois dedicated their lives to serving the youth of three communities: Keene, Manchester and Laconia. They were a positive force in countless lives of NH youth. In 1998 they were recognized by Governor Jeanne Shaheen for their many years of service to Lakes Region youth and families.
Charlie was a life member and president of Laconia-Gilford Lions Club. He was also a life member of the following organizations: Lakes Region Management Club, American Legion Post 84 and The Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an active member and deacon at Laconia Congregational Church.
Survivors include three sons, Jonathan and his wife Nanci, Stephen and his wife Marcia Wadsworth and Paul and his wife Doreen along with four grandchildren; Taylor, Cassie and her husband Colin, Kelsey and Reid; nieces, nephews and extended family in the NH north country. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters Mildred Trombley and Virginia Case as well as his loving wife of 57 years, Lois.
There will be no calling hours.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00am on Thursday, September, 22, 2016 at the Congregational Church of Laconia, 69 Pleasant Street, Laconia.
Burial will be private.
